IGP Tunji Disu Holds First Conference with Senior Police Officers, Sets Up Committee on State Police

Abuja, March 4, 2026 – The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Tuesday convened his first strategic conference with senior officers of the Nigeria Police Force, bringing together top commanders to deliberate on national security priorities and institutional reforms.

The high-level meeting, held at the Peacekeeping Conference Centre in Abuja, marked the first official engagement between the police chief and the leadership cadre of the Force since he assumed office.

The conference aimed to align operational directives, strengthen command responsibility, and set clear performance benchmarks for senior police officers across the country.

In his opening remarks, Disu urged officers to lead by example and maintain the highest standards of discipline, professionalism, and integrity in the discharge of their duties. He also announced measures to strengthen internal accountability within the police.

According to the IGP, oversight of internal monitoring units such as the Complaints Response Unit and the X-Squad will be reinforced to ensure that officers operate strictly within the law and remain accountable to the public.

Disu reiterated his commitment to modernizing policing in Nigeria through intelligence-led and technology-driven strategies. He noted that improved intelligence coordination, enhanced investigative capacity, and the adoption of modern policing tools will be central to addressing emerging security threats.

A major highlight of the conference was the inauguration of a Steering Committee on the establishment of State Police.

The police chief described the move as timely amid evolving security challenges across Nigeria, noting that discussions around State Police form part of broader national efforts to improve security governance and bring policing closer to communities.

He explained that the concept is being examined carefully to ensure that it enhances community participation in crime prevention while strengthening coordination within the country’s overall security architecture.

Disu clarified that the proposed State Police structure is not intended to replace the Nigeria Police Force but rather to function as a complementary system within a coordinated national framework.

The committee has been mandated to review existing policing models within and outside Nigeria, assess community security needs and emerging threats, and propose an operational framework for establishing and coordinating State Police structures.

It will also address issues related to recruitment, training standards, resource allocation, and the development of accountability mechanisms aimed at maintaining professionalism and public trust.

The Steering Committee is chaired by Olu Ogunsakin, Director-General of the National Institute for Police Studies.

Other members include CP Bode Ojajuni (Secretary), DCP Okebechi Agora, DCP Suleyman Gulma, ACP Ikechukwu Okafor, CSP Tolulope Ipinmisho, and retired Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Ojukwu, who currently serves as Provost of the Police Public Relations School.

The conference brought together senior officers from across the country as part of ongoing efforts by the police leadership to strengthen operational effectiveness and enhance national security.
