Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, has attributed the peaceful conduct of the recent All Progressives Congress (APC) State Congress in Delta to the inclusive leadership style of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
Speaking on Focus Nigeria, a political programme on African Independent Television (AIT), Aniagwu explained that the emergence of the new APC state executive committee followed extensive consultations and consensus-building among party stakeholders across the state.
Consultations Across 25 Local Governments
According to the commissioner, the process was guided by a directive from Bola Ahmed Tinubu urging party leaders nationwide to promote inclusiveness and internal democracy ahead of the party’s national convention.
Aniagwu said Delta State adopted a broad consultative approach, with Governor Oborevwori convening a stakeholders’ meeting that included both founding APC members who joined the party in 2014 and new members who defected to the party in April 2025.
He noted that stakeholders agreed that each local government area should conduct consultations independently to ensure fairness and prevent any single area from influencing decisions in another.
The consultations were held across the 25 local government areas of Delta State, followed by meetings at the senatorial district level and a final stakeholders’ gathering at the Government House in Asaba.
APC Congress in Asaba Described as Peaceful and Colourful
Aniagwu said the outcome of the consultations was evident during the APC State Congress held at the Cenotaph in Asaba, which he described as peaceful, colourful, and reflective of unity within the party.
According to him, the atmosphere during the congress showed that party members were united in their commitment to the future of the APC and the development of Delta State.
He also noted that the composition of the new state executive committee followed the state’s political balancing tradition by ensuring fair representation across the three senatorial districts.
Tinubu Commended for Promoting Internal Democracy
The commissioner further praised President Tinubu for allowing internal democracy to thrive within the APC by avoiding the imposition of leaders on state chapters.
Aniagwu said the President’s leadership approach has helped reduce political tensions in many states by allowing decisions to be made through consultations at the state level rather than being dictated from Abuja.
Delta APC Reaffirms Support for Tinubu Ahead of 2027
Aniagwu also reiterated the Delta APC’s support for President Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections, noting that party members in the state had long endorsed his leadership and reform agenda.
He recalled that since Delta political leaders joined the APC on April 28, 2025, they had aligned with the President’s Renewed Hope agenda, which he said has strengthened governance and economic reforms across the country.
The commissioner added that federal policies under the Tinubu administration have improved the financial capacity of state governments, enabling them to undertake more development projects.
He also commended Governor Oborevwori for using state resources to drive infrastructure development and ensure that all local governments benefit from government programmes.
Aniagwu urged opposition parties to build stronger internal consensus if they hope to compete effectively in future elections, stressing that politics remains “a game of numbers” that requires unity and collaboration.
According to him, the willingness of APC leaders in Delta to set aside personal ambitions in favour of collective party interests played a key role in the success of the congress and will strengthen the party ahead of future elections.
